File size in KB or dimensions in pixels: which should you change?
“200 KB or less” limits file size. “Up to 1200 px wide” limits pixel dimensions. A picture that looks small can still be a large file.
When only file size is limited
Set a KB target in the compressor. Two 1200×750 images may have different byte sizes because their contents and formats differ.
When pixel dimensions are limited
Enter width 1200 in the resizer and keep aspect ratio on to calculate height proportionally. Entering both dimensions fits inside those bounds; it does not necessarily produce those exact dimensions.
When both limits apply
- Resize first and save the result.
- If the file is still too large, compress that saved result.
- Check whether compression reduced dimensions again. If exact dimensions are required, do not submit an output with different dimensions.
Example: our own 1600×1000 sample becomes 1200×750 when resized to width 1200 with its ratio kept. This demonstrates dimensions, not a guaranteed compression ratio.

| AI-generated cafe image · Target size 200 KB | 3,383.7 → 199.5 KB · Within target | 1600 × 1000 |
| Keep pixel dimensions · Target size 10 KB | 3,383.7 → 47.4 KB · Target exceeded | 1600 × 1000 |
Check small text and edges before using the result. A smaller file does not guarantee acceptance by the destination.
